Rant o' The Day

And she turns to him and says, "You're cute."
Smiling he responds, "Thanks, you're not too bad yourself."

Where in the world is this ever acceptable? Perhaps I am taking this too literally or something, but I feel like never should one say the words, "You're not too bad yourself," regardless of joking, trying to be cute, or otherwise. Only if you are serious and are walking the opposite direction do I feel like the words you're not too bad yourself are acceptable.

There are reasons why I feel this way about such a statement.

A) It has the word bad in the "compliment"

This is not a good thing. I feel (solely my opinion) a compliment should only exist of positive remarks. Por ejemplo, saying, "These Frosted Mini Wheats (MMMMMMM) are not bad at all," is not nearly as convincing or positive as let's say, "These Frosted Mini Wheats are delicious!" Now, I understand both of these statements actually could mean too different things, however, if they are "not bad at all" why not just say they are "good" or "delicious." This probably just irks me due to the fact I believe society is incredibly pessimistic and cannot just say, "You know what, things are good."

B) It sounds fakely positive

No matter how you put it, it just seems insulting. If you don't think the other is cute, just don't say anything, say, "aww thanks," accept the compliment and move on. If you were really amazing, you'd probably admit that you are not into them but still say other positive of the other person instead of physical appearance, but I do not expect that to happen.

C) It is kinda a little painful to hear

You are basically taking the compliment, and then throwing it in there face that not only that the other is ugly, but you are going to placate their feelings by making it seem like you don't think they are ugly. But, again, REGARDLESS of whether you say this in a joking tone or not, it still elicits this feeling of like, ouch, I just got burned with a backwards insult.

Again, perhaps I am just looking too much into this simple sentence, perhaps I lost my sense of what was "cute" with my aging mind and body, however, this was just a little rant I figured I should share with the world.

Enjoy!

"Express yourself, even if you think no one is listening to you."
